Out of those 17 books that I’ve finished reading, 9 of them were audiobooks. This post is about how I’m revising my reading life. And that number doesn’t include all of the picture books Jack and I have read together.īut this post isn’t about me mourning my former reading life. I try not to allow that number to get me down because at least I’m still making reading a priority in my life. In the past six months I’ve finished reading 17 books. Jack will be six months old on February 21st, and this is incredibly hard to admit, but it’s been difficult to find time to read. My response (mostly to myself) was always that reading is a priority in my life, it’s a way of life, so I’ll find time to read. I even dealt with colleagues commenting on how much I was reading and how I’d never have time to read once Jack arrived. I’m a smart woman, so I knew to expect changes to my sleep schedule, my work life, and my life at home. Before Jack was born in August many of my friends and family told me how different my life would be.

Nelson's text suggests that readers must acknowledge their inhumanity so that they can make different choices: "If I could forget, believe me, I would," says the narrator. One especially effective example of this transition occurs when the word "tears" moves from verb to noun: "A mob/ heartless and heedless, answering to no god,/ tears through the patchwork drapery of our dreams" ends one sonnet, which leads into the next, "Tears, through the patchwork drapery of dream,/ for the hanging bodies, the men on flaming pyres,/ the crowds standing around like devil choirs." Both the book's heartrending topic of murderous racism and the linguistically complex form require a sophisticated reader. ) brilliant heroic crown of sonnets serves not only as an elegy for Emmett Till, the African-American boy from Chicago brutally killed at age 14 while he was visiting Southern relatives in 1955, but also as a compelling invitation to bear witness.Īs the poet explains in a foreword, a heroic crown of sonnets is comprised of a sequence of 15 interlinked sonnets each takes the last line of the previous sonnet as its first line, and the form results here in a eulogy both stately and poignant. The Vestrits live in Bingtown, which borders the sea, Jamaillia, Chalced, and the Rain Wilds. Vivacia is the ship bought by the Vestrit family, who are still in debt to the Rain Wilder for the price of the Wizardwood. Only a liveship is capable of crossing the perilous Rain Wild River to trade with the Rain Wilders, who have valuable goods plundered from an ancient Elderling ruin. When three generations of a ship's owners die on board, a liveship "quickens", becoming a sentient being with a personality, the memories of the dead ancestors, and a psychic connection to living family members. (This reminds me of a conversation we had at FYA Book Club last week - don't ask how we got on the topic - about how one time my family and I were in Mexico and were driving back over the border and the INS agent didn't ask my dad for ID or anything, just who had won the US-Germany soccer game in the World Cup earlier that day. I can't be seen with this book in public! They'll try to deport me! There is also a soccer ball on the cover, and I am an American. There is symbolic barbed wire and the colors echo the feeling of the book - bright spots of color against an arid, desolate backdrop. I like this cover! Yes, it features a headless person, but the person isn't so much the focus. A great read for young and/or beginning readers as it highlights days of the week and commonly used sight words. Perhaps this will inspire children to investigate their interests and discover that they can do a lot with a few simple things.” With the help of a few vegetables, cinder blocks, simple toys, her parents’ clothes, and her imagination, she explores the often-overlooked potential of everyday things. I also enjoyed Lilly’s creativity and resourcefulness. The simple illustrations are unassuming, and yet contain fun details, such as the facial expressions on the teddy bear and the doll when Lilly is making music and trying to get them to sing. The bright colors are cheery and reflect the playfulness of the story. “Visually, Silly Lilly is an attractive book.
